How to eat a stroopwafel

The stroopwafel is made by pressing dough in a waffle iron until it’s ultra-thin. The fresh waffle is taken off the iron while it’s still warm and split into two, and the warm filling (stroop means syrup in Dutch) is spread on each half before putting the sides back together.

The outside is a waffle cookie that’s not too sweet. The inside is sweeter of course.

The gooey filling is made of caramel, which is one of the reasons why it’s such a brilliant pairing with a cup of coffee.

How to Eat a Stroopwafel

From a traditional standpoint, a stroopwafel is best if eaten with a hot beverage.

  1. Place the stroopwafel on the rim of your mug.
  2. Wait a few minutes.
  3. Now bite into it and discover the gooey center.

The great thing about this method is that you get more of the contrast between the waffles and the syrupy middle. That’s what really makes this cookie stand out from all of the rest.

It’s a magical combination. The gentle heat from a hot cup of coffee warms the stroopwafel to perfection, softening it just so. With the optimal level of chewiness, it’s as though the stroopwafel has just come straight off the waffle iron. Not a coffee drinker? Not a problem. This neat trick works just as well with a hot cup of tea!
